| OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS: BENEFITS BEYOND A SHINY COAT |
 |
Omega-3 Fatty Acids have long been used to manage inflammatory skin diseases in animals. Recent studies have shown it also has the ability to help slow the progression of Osteoarthritis in dogs. EPA, an omega-3 fatty acid, has anti-inflammatory properties which reduce joint inflammation and slow cartilage breakdown, thus decreasing the pain associated with arthritis, and improving clinical signs of arthritis, helping dogs walk, run, and play.
EPA is available naturally in fish and plant sources as well as commercially in joint supplements and prescription veterinary diets. Omega – 3 fatty acids available for human use, such as fish oil, should only be used under direct supervision of your veterinarian to avoid under or overdosing your pet. Veterinary approved products such as Derm Caps, 3V-Fatty Acid, and Synovi G-3 are examples of supplements that can be obtained from your veterinarian.
If you have an older dog with clinical signs of Osteoarthritis, talk to your Vet about incorporating omega-3 fatty acids as part of your pet’s arthritis management protocol. |
